Pinwheel Resto Cafe is located on the quite streets of Lebuh Chulia, in Georgetown Penang. From afar, you would be able to notice their logo hanging outside the shop. Don’t be fooled by their cramped and tiny entrance, as this 1-year old cafe serves fusion pastas, pizzas, as well as desserts. Coffee, Non-caffeine, and milkshakes are also available throughout the day.
First Impression – Pinwheel Resto Cafe
As you enter through the doors of Pinwheel Resto Cafe, you will immediately be greeted by a well-lit ambience. A mural art towards the end of the cafe is also available for those who prefer a OOTD shot.
Syrups and menu are also displayed on a shelf and on the wall at the counter bar.
The Instagram-able walls are located towards the end of the cafe!
The Food
We spoke with the owner, and we decided to have him recommend some foods for us to try. Since Pinwheel Resto Cafe specialises in fusion cuisines, we decided to go for all the fusion dishes.
Biscoff Shake (RM17.90) Biscoff Shake (RM17.90)
We were told that Pinwheel Resto Cafe has just reopened for dine-in and they have added some new items on the menu. The Biscoff Shake was one of them. If you are a fan of Lotus Biscoff Biscuit, we highly recommend that you give it a try as this milkshake was sweet, thick, and full of Biscoff and caramel flavor!
For starters, we had the Korean Chicken Wings. The chicken wings are deep-fried to crispy-perfection and is entirely coated with Korean hot and spicy sauce. We loved the crunch and seasoning on the chickens, however we find that the sauce are a tad too spicy for our tolerance level. Proceed with caution!
We were also recommended the carbonara spring roll, their best-selling starter. On the face of it, this looks like a typical Chinese spring roll served with sweet Thai chili sauce. However, it is actually stuffed with creamy carbonara sauce, carrot, mushroom and chicken. The carbonara was not too overpowering, and it actually tasted quite well together with the chili sauce.
The absolute fan-favourite and best-seller at Pinwheel Resto Cafe has to be the Italian-Thai fusion dish of Carbonara Tomyum Pasta with Prawns! Pasta was cooked to perfection, not too soggy and maintains a little bit of chewiness, cooked in home-made creamy tomyum sauce, and finished with tons of parmesan cheese.
Personally, I felt that the Thai aspects are a bit more overpowering, as the aroma of coconut milk and lemongrass are very pungent. At the same time, the presence of Parmesan Cheese is hard to ignore as well. Overall, we felt that this dish, although sound funny at first, was pretty harmonious in the end.
To finish our meal, we had their cake of the day, which is Crème Brulee. The cake itself was pretty moist, but for the meal we’ve had, felt a bit too substantial. Perhaps a ‘lighter’ cake would do justice to our tummy! There are different cakes on rotation every other day so be sure to check with the servers.
Final Thoughts – Pinwheel Resto Cafe
Nowadays, it is hard to find a cafe where the owners are brave to bring out innovative dishes. Pinwheel Resto Cafe is one of the very few exception! We felt that the dishes on offer were very refreshing, and has many items that you can’t find in other typical cafes. For the adventurous, we encourage you to try out Pinwheel Resto Cafe. For the conservatives, fret not, you will still be able to find your typical cafe food and drinks here as well.
We would like to thank Irshath and the Pinwheel team for their hospitality and for hosting us for dinner at Pinwheel Resto Cafe!
