The Swimming Club – Food Review 2022

The Swimming Club is a poolside bar located on the rooftop of KL Journal Hotel. Often dubbed as KL’s most Instagrammable rooftop infinity pool & bar, The Swimming Club offers poolside bites and snacks, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The Swimming Club is also open for private events and reservations. We’ve used the refreshing salt water outdoor pool during our stay at The Journal Hotel, and you can check out our review HERE.

I couldn’t resist from trying a couple of cocktails at The Swimming Club, along with some bites and mains. Here’s what we tried:

To start our feats, we had the Grilled Prawn and Mango Salad. This is a rather innovative dish as raw watercress are mixed with slices of sweet mango and grilled prawns. I’ve never had raw watercress before hence this dish was rather refreshing. The watercress was crunchy, with a hint of bitterness to it. The mango and grilled prawns goes well with each other.

The next dish we had was more of a bar-snack. Crispy Whitebait Fish deep fried to crunchy goodness. This snack is perfect to go with a cup of alcohol, overlooking the sunset.

We also had one of the best sellers at The Swimming Club, the Grilled Teriyaki Salmon Belly Skewers. You might be put off by the fact that salmon belly are extremely fatty. But fret not, as The Swimming Club does extremely well in rendering the fats of the Salmon Belly, whereas the sweet Teriyaki sauce makes it less greasy.

For mains, we had both the Seafood Aglio Olio Pasta and Soft Shell Crab Nasi Kerabu.

For the former, there are tons of seafood including Mussels, Clams and Prawns. The seafoods were fresh and noodles are cooked to perfection. Unfortunately, the pasta was a bit to dry and bland for our liking.

As for the Nasi Kerabu, we loved the twist by having a soft shell crab in the dish. All the sauces and condiments goes well with each other.

We also tried a couple of their signature cocktails, and we find all to be very refreshing and innovative. We are particularly a fan of their Whisky Sour, where they bravely (yet smartly) added coconut milk into the mix. The end result resembles a gentleman’s drink in a tropical island!

We also enjoyed their Pandan Caipirinha and Assam Boi Mojito, both were altered and added elements of local ingredients.

Overall, we enjoyed our meal at The Swimming Club at KL Journal Hotel. It is definitely a great place to chill, have some great foods and amazingly innovative and delicious cocktails. Check them out when you’re staying at KL Journal Hotel next time.
