I really wanted to have a unique staycation during my time at Kuching, and came across The Culver – a unique resort nestled in the dense flora and undergrowth of Santubong, a 40 minutes ride from Kuching city. As the name suggest, you will be staying in a culvert, designed to act as a mini sanctuary for guests. The Culvert is also connected to a local beach, and it is a 2 minutes walk down a flight of stairs.
There are multiple room categories available, from budget-friendly nature-view deluxe room to the luxurious sea-view suite.
First Impression
My arrival to The Culvert was a pleasant one. I was immediately greeted by the hotel manager and have my luggage settled and sent to my room. My room was also ready when I arrived. The lobby is connected to the all-day-dining restaurant at The Culvert – Tanju’ Café. This is where you will be having your breakfast as well.
There is also an infinity pool by the restaurant. There are a total of 2 infinity pools at The Culvert, more on that later.
The Room – Sea View Suite
My room was a sea view suite, and it is facing the ocean. Strategically, it is also facing the sun-set viewing deck, and you can enjoy amazing sunsets right inside your own culvert. My suite is separated into 2 areas, the sleeping area as well as a separate shower area.
My bed was a king-sized bed and totally comfortable for 2 adults. There is a small hanging area as well as a small table for you to put your belongings.
There is also a tablet installed with Netflix, as there are no TVs at The Culvert. 2 bottled mineral waters are provided, and you can refill them at the lobby.
The toilet area was a semi-indoor/outdoor setting, and it can get pretty cold and windy at night. There is a single vanity, with basic toiletries provided.
I was surprised to find out that my toilet came with a standalone bath-tub! The shower is fitted in the bath-tub.
Food & Beverage at The Culvert
Food options are pretty limited if you are staying at The Culvert. Unless you are driving, you’d most probably spend all your time eating at Tanju’ Cafe. Breakfast buffet is served here. Choices includes western and local dishes.
Prices for the ala carte menu is pretty affordable, considering how remote this area is. A main course will set you back around RM30 and a cocktail around RM20.
I also had the opportunity to try out the floating lunch! The floating lunch is designed for 2-3 person, and includes 2 drinks, cut-fruits, salad, wedges, a pizza, smoked duck platter as well as deep-fried calamari. I decided to have the floating lunch at around 3PM, and it was AMAZING. As the infinity pool is nestled in the forest, there is minimal penetration of sunlight hence it is not too hot. At the same time, you get to dine while overlooking the magnificent sea view.
The Facilities
There are numerous facilities at The Culvert to keep you busy. First off, there are 2 infinity pools, one located by the lobby and another further down by the pool bar. According to the hotel manager, it is recommended for kids to enjoy the pool at the lobby, as the staff will help to supervise.
For those who enjoy reading, there is a library overlooking the ocean. Gym is also avialble tho equipments are pretty limited. You can also enjoy sauna at The Culvert!
There is also a sunset viewing deck.
Final Thoughts
Overall I really enjoyed my stay at The Culvert. My time at The Culvert gave me an opportunity to properly ‘switch-off’ and surrender myself to nature. Waking up to birds chirping, enjoying the sea view, and listen to sea waves at night, it is definitely a unique staycation that I will remember for years to come.
