All the way from Yaowarat Chinatown in Bangkok, Thai Yeh Kope (泰爷)has finally landed in Kuala Lumpur. Located in the residential area of Kuchai Lama, Thai Yeh Kope serve up classic Thai dishes, perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
You would not be able to miss the café, as it’s white exterior and a strong hint of Thai ID would catch your attention right away. On our visit, we went during dinner. We arrived at around 6PM, and thankfully there was no queue.
As you enter, you would have spotted a Thai-style bicycle on your left, where they sell some souvenirs.
Seating area is quite limited inside the café, but there are outdoor seating as well.
I quite like the environment in the café, as the staff actually spoke Thai to us. We also liked the Thai design with a hint of Chinese influence.
To get things started, we first ordered a Cha Yen (Thai Iced Milk Tea) as well as a Green soda. Unfortunately both drinks were a let down. I was slightly disappointed at the fact that they use disposable plastic cup to serve the iced tea. The green soda was quite tasteless in my opinion, and for RM9.90 I was expecting something better. If you had to just pick one drink, I would recommend their Cha Yen (as the flavors are not bad), or maybe their signature coffee (which we did not try but was recommended in the menu).
Moving on, we ordered the toasted bun with fillings. We opted for the salted egg filling as it was highly recommended by my friends. The bun was toasted to perfection, and it was served pipping hot. The outer layer was also finished with salted butter, giving it a fragrant as well as a hint of saltiness to go with the sweet filling. We really liked the bun.
For mains, I went for a Kuey Chap – a black soy sauce based noodle soup served with rice sheets. In Thai Yeh, the Kuey Chap is served with roasted pork, as well as pork balls. I really liked the soup, it was flavorful and the rice sheets were decent. The standout condiment has to be the roasted pork, as it was really fresh! I would highly recommend you to add on some other condiments available on your table, namely some lime juice to give it an extra kick, as well as chili flakes.
Please stay away from their Pad Thai. Although the portion were huge, the Pad Thai was a plate of mess. It does not have any sort of Tamarind flavor synonymous to the Pad Thais you would find in Thailand. Furthermore, the prawns were not fresh and very mushy – we barely can get the meat out of the shell. It was so lacking in flavor, that we continuously doused it in fish sauce and lime juice, to give it more flavor. I would highly recommend you to give this dish a pass.
At this point, the only dish that impressed us was the toasted bun, and we decided to order another one, this time with their signature filling – Pandan Kaya. Again, the bun was served pipping hot, and it was equally, if not tasted better than the salted egg filling. We really enjoyed the buns.
Thai Yeh Kope – Final Thoughts
We would recommend Thai Yeh Kope as a place to have breakfast, or even high-tea. I would stay away from their main dishes, until at least they have improve the quality of the food. But, I would love to return just for their toasted bun.
