Supper Penang @ Hutton Lane – Food Review 2022

Supper Penang (深夜食堂) is a casual Asian Fusion restaurant, serving comfort food most suitable for supper, hence the name of the restaurant. However, you can always head over to Supper at Hutton Lane in Georgetown, or if you’re based in Mainland Penang, its another branch will be at Bayu Mutiara. The food served at Supper are mostly Thai-influenced.

We visited Supper Penang (深夜食堂) at Hutton Lane for brunch, and we were served a few of their signature dishes. Here’s what we tried.

For drinks, we had the 2 most famous Thai drinks, Cha Yen and Cha Khiew, which are Thai Milk Tea and Thai Green Milk Tea. Both drinks were served cold (our preference). For us, the drinks tasted exactly like what you would have in Thailand, albeit abit watery. The ice melted pretty quickly in the drinks hence towards the end of our meal, the drinks were pretty diluted.

                                                               Back: Cha Yen

We had the shop’s best seller snack to start our feast – Signature Crispy Roast Pork (Siu Yok). The meat itself is sweet and tender, and has the perfect ratio of lean and fat meat. However, the skin was not crispy, and for us it was a let down. Roasted pork is most famous for their crispy skin, and although the meat itself was sweet and succulent, we would give it a pass had we know the pork skin was not crispy.

For mains, we first had the signature dish of Supper, Tom Yum Mama Noodle. Mama, is known among Thai locals as instant noodles, which in fact is actually a brand of instant noodles – similar to how Malaysians unanimously refer Maggie as Instant noodles. The noodle was springy, and we absolutely loved the tomyum soup. The soup was sour and spicy, and extremely flavorful. This dish also came with deep fried fish skin, roasted pork, minced pork, lime slices and an egg yolk in the middle.

Next up, we had Tonkatsu Curry Don, which is deep fried pork cutlet with Japanese curry, served with rice. This dish was average at best. The pork was tasteless and the curry sauce was abit too watery for our liking.

Final Thoughts

Overall, we felt that Supper (深夜食堂) serves up very comfort food, and is perfect on every meal (not just supper!). If you’re craving for some comfort Thai food, you should definitely try Supper out.
